In the early 1980's, Meade County High School was searching for the next leader of its Greenwave basketball program. Principal Tank Wilson had a clear vision. He wanted a champion. He reached out to State Champion Coach Larry Miller and, during that conversation, shared a belief that captured the heart of Meade County when he said, “We’ve still got those kids.”
That belief became reality during one of the most memorable seasons in Meade County basketball history.
This episode of Greenwave The Stories of Our Community features Coach Larry Miller, along with players Johnny Devries and Scott Hawkins, as they reflect on a team that made history as the first boys basketball program to reach the state tournament. Their story is not just about wins and championships, but about the culture, values, and commitment that defined who they were as teammates and young men.
Through their reflections, viewers are reminded that a program's strength is built on trust, belief, and a shared commitment to something bigger than oneself. The 1984 Greenwave basketball team represents a chapter in Meade County history where effort, character, and pride came together to create something lasting.
Greenwave The Stories of Our Community continues to preserve and share the stories that shaped Meade County Schools and the people who proudly call this community home.
