Greenwave: The Stories of our Community

For more than 40 years, Dr. John Inman served Meade County Schools as a member of the Board of Education, helping guide the district through generations of change and growth. His years of service span new schools and facilities, expanded programs, changing technology, and countless decisions made around the board table. In many ways, his influence shows up throughout the school district we know today.

The newest episode of Greenwave: The Stories of Our Community, titled The Chairman of Greenwave Nation, celebrates Dr. Inman’s extraordinary legacy through the voices of those who served alongside him and knew him personally. They remember a leader who was respectful, listened carefully, valued others' perspectives, and had a remarkable ability to build consensus. That steady leadership helped create a Board of Education that could remain unified while making important decisions about the future of Meade County Schools.

At the center of those decisions was always a focus on students. Whether the conversation involved constructing an auditorium, expanding a school, investing in technology, or creating new opportunities through career and technical education, those closest to Dr. Inman remember the same driving force behind his leadership. He wanted Meade County students to have the best opportunities the district could provide.

His impact, however, cannot be measured only by buildings, programs, or the plaques that now bear his name. This Greenwave Story also provides a glimpse of John Inman as a father, mentor, colleague, and friend. His daughter recalls her first opening day as a newly hired teacher in Meade County Schools. Dr. Inman was there when her name was announced, and someone later told her, “You should have seen the look on your dad’s face when they called your name.” She remembers that moment as one when she could deeply feel just how proud her father was of her.

Those who worked with Dr. Inman also remember that his decades of service were never about recognition. When a portion of the district’s facilities was named in his honor, he was nearly speechless. His humility in that moment reflected how he approached his service for decades. The recognition was never the goal. Providing an environment where Meade County students could receive a great education was.

Today, Dr. Inman can step away from the board table and see another generation benefiting from the school system he spent so much of his life helping to shape, including his own grandchildren. His fingerprints remain on facilities and programs throughout the district, but perhaps his greatest legacy is the pride in Meade County Schools that he helped nurture and the people he encouraged, mentored, and served along the way.

More than four decades of service are difficult to capture in a single story, and perhaps even more difficult to capture in a single title. But one longtime colleague found the words.

“Dr. Inman is the chairman of the Greenwave Nation.”

The title fittingly captures a lifetime of service, pride, and belief in Meade County Schools.
